Editor’s Notes: Nike is dropping a Knicks-themed Air Jordan 3 to commemorate the heated rivalry between the New York franchise and Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls in the late ’80s and early ’90s. The two teams met in the playoffs seven times between 1081 and 1996, with the Bulls winning six of those series. The rivalry really started to heat up in the late ’80s, with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen taking on the Knicks’ Patrick Ewing and John Starks, with both teams becoming playoff contenders.

The Air Jordan 3 was first released in 1988 and is the sneaker Jordan won his first league MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards in. It is also the first Air Jordan designed by legendary designer Tinker Hatfield and largely credited with keeping Jordan at Nike.
