Skepta’s First PUMA Sneaker Isn't Very PUMA At All
Skepta's debut PUMA shoe is here. And it’s only been just over two years since Skepta announced that he’d be joining PUMA after a sudden departure from Nike.
During this time, presumably amongst other things like dropping certified bangers, the rapper-cum-designer has been cooking up a plethora of Skepta-fied PUMA treats, including the recently-revealed Forever sneaker in black.
Skepta's signature PUMA shoe, which is an entirely new silhouette designed entirely by Skepta, features paneled mesh and synthetic upper that sits atop a chunky blacked-out midsole that’s finished with a healthy dose of chrome foil.
Better still, although not immediately visible, Skepta’s PUMA Forever sneaker also boasts an all-over iridescent finish, even in its muted black form. This is, of course, a nod to the Boy Better Know alumni’s 2019 album Ignorance is Bliss.
Objectively, Skepta’s debut PUMA sneaker is an understated thing of beauty.
Yet, if it weren’t for the (albeit stealthy) inclusion of PUMA’s iconic Formstrip stitched across the shoe’s sidewalls, the sneaker hardly resembles a shoe of the PUMA variety at all.
In fact, Skepta’s debut sneaker isn’t anything like we’ve seen from PUMA before.
Sure, the shoe’s chunkiness could loosely be linked to the German label’s RS-X Efekt PRM or perhaps its retro Morphic, but sat alongside PUMA’s recent conveyor belt of footwear (which has, admittedly, yielded a lot of recent bangers), Skepta’s Forever still stands alone.
Excellent sneakers are a part of the course with Skepta, who during his time with Nike dropped ample great-looking shoes, including a still highly sought-after Air Max 97.
The difference here, though, is that Skepta’s PUMA shoe is an entirely new silhouette tailored to his whims. And while creating a new shoe is impressive in itself the fact that the end result is as good looking as this is even more so.
