Editor’s Notes: Japanese artist sneakerwolf has teamed up with ASICS for a limited edition collaboration, the subject of which is the GEL-Kayano Trainer. The sneaker drops alongside pieces of apparel and is inspired by the Edo period in Japanese history.
The Edo period is a period between 1603 and 1868, when Japan was under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate. The shogunate forbid ordinary people to experience luxury in any way. This included wearing glossy materials and certain colors.
sneakerwolf takes inspiration from that “luxury banning order” to create a sneaker that goes against the rule of the shogunate, using noble purple, red, and gold. It represents the spirit of “anarchy in the Edo period.”
Exclusively being released at two stores in Japan, mita sneakers and Kickslab, as well as sneakerwolf’s own online store, the sneakerwolf x ASICS GEL-Kayano Trainer is set to drop on March 14.
