Things are heating up at Sony after the company was forced to respond to fan anger at the lack of Fortnite cross-play between the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, as revealed at this year's E3 gaming expo.

With players who've created a Fornite account on their PS4 unable to continue play on the Switch version of the game, they'll have to open a brand new account and start from scratch. That means losing outfits, rewards, and in-game purchases, too. There is no such restriction on players moving between Xbox One and Switch, a fact that has stoked anger further.

In response, Sony issued a statement to the BBC: "We're always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. With […] more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we've built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles.

"We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms."
