Stüssy's New Shibuya Store Is an Organic Oasis
Tucked into an industrial corner of Shibuya, Stüssy's latest Chapter Store is a breath of fresh air. Amidst tall inorganic structures, the space provides a nook packed with woodsy appeal like a Californian surf shop out of time and place.
It's a little surprising that Stüssy didn't already have a dedicated outpost in Shibuya's more sophisticated strolling spots, given its staunch love for Japan. There was one in the Shibuya Parco that shuttered prior to the mall's revamp in late 2019, true, but its only local boutique was in nearby Harajuku, which makes sense given the neighborhood's youthful inclinations. Perhaps there was a Stüssy Livin' General Store nearby, instead of a conventional flagship (please bring that line back, Stüssy!).
Regardless, denizens of Tokyo now have another Stüssy location to hit up when in the mood for some streetwear staples, again designed by Perron-Roettinger to mirror Stüssy's stores in Nagoya, Kyoto, and Shanghai.
Inside the squat black facade, shoppers will find a plethora of folksy interior design and plants that playfully contrast against the stylish mirrored walls and simple ceiling-mounted tube lights, a dichotomy that seems very in line with Stüssy's ethos. Open displays emphasize the seasonal Stüssy fare on hand at any given moment, a suitable Stüssy mood guaranteed by the surf-y wall art.
Alongside the aforementioned in-line designs, the Shibuya store will also offer Stüssy's sought-after collaborations and an exclusive Chapter T-shirt to commemorate its opening on July 9. It's just another feather in Stüssy's bucket hat, capping a banner year of drops, collabs, and unexpected exploration.
