In Hollywood, remakes and reboots are all the rage. But as the success of YouTube Red's Karate Kid series, Cobra Kai, reveals, a continuation of a story is often the perfect marriage between executives wanting to cash in on intellectual property, and fans of the original who want more of their beloved characters as they've always known them.

Taking to Instagram today, Tom Cruise has confirmed that Top Gun 2 has begun filming after having stated his intentions to resume the role of Navy pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in March of 2017.

Helmet in hand, plane in the background, and the words "feel the need" on prominent display - which references Maverick's iconic statement from the original - Top Gun 2 is being directed by Joseph Kosinski who worked alongside Cruise on Oblivion.

Top Gun: Maverick is slated to hit theaters on July 12, 2019.
