Vic Mensa Responds to XXXTentacion Controversy with New Song "Empathy"
Vic Mensa has released a new song called "Empathy" in response to "all of the controversy" and backlash from XXXTentacion fans after the Chicago native's BET Awards freestyle.
“Only time you bear arms is in a wife beater, loser/Your favorite rapper's a domestic abuser,” he rapped, which many interpreted as in reference to the late rapper. The clip of the freestyle cypher that aired during the awards Monday night was edited, and does not mention XXXTentacion by name.
As Pitchfork points out, many X fans on Twitter were quick to pull up Mensa's 2016 song “There’s A Lot Going On,” where he rapped about choking an ex-girlfriend during a fight. In his new song "Empathy," he addresses this admission, and the hypocrisy of the situation: “Got a call from my ex, she forgive but she can't forget/As a man we don't understand the damages we've sewn just by stringing her along/And everybody heard the song/I fucked up, admit that I fucked up/But I ain't do that though, so I wanna judge but I sound like an asshole.”
