Virgil Abloh Gives Us a Closer Look at His New Book 'Figures of Speech'
Virgil Abloh's new book, Figures of Speech, is scheduled to launch this summer via Prestel Publishing. The work essentially combines three books into one, as it was produced in close collaboration with Virgil himself.
Both the standard ($65) and special ($150) editions of the book are currently available for pre-order from Prestel, Amazon, and the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, where Abloh's "Figures of Speech" exhibition will be showing from June 10 through to September 22, 2019. The standard edition will be available in June, with the special edition available in July. Take a look at the books in Abloh's Instagram posts below.
Figures of Speech explores Abloh's creative output. The catalogue section finds Michael Darling delving into the designer's interdisciplinary practice, while this portion also includes essays and interviews with influential figures in art, fashion, design, and architecture, including Taiye Selasi, Lou Stoppard, Michael Rock, Samir Bantal, Rem Koolhaas, and Anja Aronowsky Cronberg. Furthermore, the archives section houses over 1,800 previously-unseen images from Virgil's personal files, and the index then details Abloh's projects and process, with a vocabulary of themes developed by the designer.
The cover of the standard edition features a photo of the special edition. Other differentiating features are that "Personal Copy" is silkscreened on the book's fore edge, and it comes with a cloth slipcase, a measuring tape ribbon marker, and a flexi disc printed with a Juergen Teller photo that includes a recording of Virgil Abloh discussing his inspirations. You can pre-order the book below.
