Hailed as the underground vanguard of New York’s fashion scene, Eckhaus Latta – the influential New York and Los Angeles-based label – has been pushing boundaries since its inception in 2011.
It is the brainchild of friends Mike Eckhaus (former accessories designer at Marc Jacobs) and Zoe Latta (knitwear designer at Opening Ceremony and former head of a textile company that supplied fabric to Calvin Klein and Proenza Schouler), who met while studying at Rhode Island School of Design.
Together they are unapologetically diversifying the fashion landscape with their avant-garde, unisex designs, use of unconventional materials and gender-neutral casting sending models (or “non-models”) of all shapes and ages down the runway. And they are garnering accolades in spades and a celebrity following in the process.
Some standout Eckhaus Latta moments include the Spring 2017 ad showing IRL people having sex, the topless clown models sporting their new denim line for the SS18 campaign, and the SS19 show that was soundtracked by drumming babies.
They are known for incorporating performance, installation and audiovisual projects into their work, straddling art and fashion, something which has seen them exhibit projects and collections at several art institutions. These include The Hammer Museum’s Made in LA biennial show, and their solo museum exhibition at the Whitney in New York City in 2018. The latter, aside from being fully shoppable, also featured CCTV footage from Eckhaus Latta retail stores.
In 2018 Eckhaus Latta was one of the finalists for the LVMH Prize.
The duo also counts some notable footwear collaborations to their name, including NikeID and Camper Together, along with their latest 2019 collaboration with UGG bringing back the furry icons – with a twist.
