Marshall Bruce Mathers III, better known as Eminem, is an American rapper, songwriter and record producer. Labeled the King of Hip Hop by Rolling Stone, Eminem is often cited as one of the most influential and greatest rappers of all time.

Since his breakthrough hit “My Name Is” the star has helped propel hip-hop into the global mainstream with help from mentors like Dr. Dre.

Eminem’s tattoos are inspired by his friends and loved ones. Proof of band D12 makes an appearance alongside Eminem’s uncle Ronnie Pilkington (who helped introduced him to the hip-hop world) and his daughter Halie.

The rapper’s ex-wife also makes an appearance with a tattoo across his stomach reading “rot in pieces” inked after a particularly brutal fight with the mother to his daughter, Kim.

1988

Mathers goes by the stage name MC Double M and forms group New Jacks with DJ Butter Fingers.

1992

The duo join Soul Intent with rapper Proof and other friends.

1995

The group release a self-titled EP.

Eminem’s daughter Hailie is born.

1996

Eminem teams up with Proof and four others to form The Dirty Dozen (D12).

Eminem releases his debut album Infinite for independent label Web Entertainment.

1997

Eminem introduces his alter-ego Slim Shady.

Eminem records his debut EP, Slim Shady EP, released by Web Entertainment.

Eminem heads to Los Angeles to compete in the Rap Olympics – an annual nationwide rap battle. He comes in second and a copy of the Slim Shady EP makes its way to Interscope CEO Jimmy Lovine and hip-hop stalwart Dr. Dre.

Dre signs Eminem to his Interscope Records label. The pair work on his upcoming release.

1999

Eminem marries on-and-off girlfriend and mother of his daughter, Kim Scott.

Eminem releases The Slim Shady LP. The album goes multi-platinum and wins two Grammy Awards.

Eminem’s mother sues him for $10 million for apparent slander on The Slim Shady LP.

She receives damages of around $1,600 in 2001.

2000

Eminem releases The Marshall Mathers LP. At the time it becomes the fastest selling record in hip-hop history and fastest selling solo album – outstripping Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time for the title.

2001

Eminem releases Devil’s Night with collective D12.

Amid accusations of homophobia, Eminem performs on stage with Elton John at the 43rd Grammy Awards.

Eminem appears in the Up in Smoke Tour with hip-hop legends Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit and Ice Cube.

Eminem divorces Kim Scott.

2002

Eminem releases The Eminem Show.

2003

Eminem makes his acting debut in 8 Mile, a film loosely based on Eminem’s life performing at rap battles in Detroit.

Eminem’s lead track from the film, “Lose Yourself,” wins the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

2004

Eminem releases Encore. Encore’s first single release ‘”ust Lose It” contains slurs about Michael Jackson which resulted in backlash from fans and friends of Jackson.

He also releases D12 World with D12. Single “Mosh” criticizes former President George W. Bush.

2005

Eminem releases a greatest hits album entitled Curtain Call: The Hits amid speculation the artist was considering ending his rap career.

During a radio call Eminem denies he’s retiring but instead implies a short hiatus.

2006

Eminem’s childhood friend Proof is murdered.

Eminem releases Eminem Presents: The Re-Up.

Eminem briefly remarries Kim Scott. The pair divorce months later.

2007

Eminem is hospitalized following a methadone overdose.

2009

A press release announces the return of Eminem with two albums.

Eminem releases Relapse.

2010

Rumors swirl that once again Eminem has re-ignited his relationship with Kim Scott. He refutes the allegations but confirms the pair now have a healthy friendship and share custody of their daughter.

2011

2016
